International Mother’s Day has been celebrated all over the world for many years. But why did the holiday come about, when is it actually celebrated, and how can you give your mom a gift on this very day?
Why Mother’s Day Is Celebrated
Every mom knows that bringing a new little human being into the world is life’s greatest miracle, and although things can sometimes be complicated with us children, our mothers love us unconditionally. So who else should we thank for our lives than our parents, especially our mothers, who carried us in their bellies for nine months and then take care of us until adulthood? This is therefore a day when we can thank our mothers for everything they have done and continue to do for us. It is also a celebration of motherhood, the possibility of having a baby, and therefore fertility. Unfortunately, there are also women among us who cannot give birth to their baby, but even so they have the option of adoption or foster care, and this day belongs to them too.
How Mother’s Day Came About
Motherhood and fertility were celebrated already in ancient Greece. Today it is more of a day when children give their mothers flowers or make them a homemade gift.
Mother’s Day was first celebrated in the USA in 1907, and from 1914 it was recognized as international and spread all over the world. We can thank Anne Marie Reeves Jarvis, who fought for mothers’ rights during the American Civil War. Her daughter then promoted this American holiday, and it began to be celebrated on the second Sunday in May.
In our country, this day was promoted by Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk’s daughter and was first celebrated as late as 1923. After the Second World War, it was celebrated here more as International Women’s Day due to the communist regime. Since 1989, Mother’s Day has been celebrated again, although International Women’s Day is still more present in memory.
In most countries, Mother’s Day is celebrated according to the American model, that is, on the second Sunday in May. That is also the case here, and this year the day falls on May 8, 2022. However, some countries merged it with International Women’s Day, and in Great Britain it is even celebrated on Easter Sunday, which dates back to the 16th century, when so-called Mothering Sunday was celebrated.
Father’s Day Is Celebrated Too
We should also not forget fathers. Just like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day comes from the USA. This day was first celebrated in 1910, and it was officially proclaimed by U.S. President Lyndon Johnson only in 1966. It is not widely celebrated here yet, but we can find it in the calendar on the third Sunday in June.
How to Delight Mom on Mother’s Day
Surely a T-shirt or mug with the inscription Best Mom in the World will make her happy. However, if she has small children, she will definitely be even happier if dad takes over so that mom can go for a massage, visit the hairdresser, have coffee with a friend, or curl up in bed with a book or spend time in front of the TV with a nice movie. It’s not that mom doesn’t want to be with her children; she will certainly appreciate a little time for herself. Because a happy mom means happy children.
Some mothers, on the other hand, will be happy to spend this day with their children, and they will surely be pleased by a handmade card, a flower picked in a meadow, or a homemade candle or chocolate, etc.
If you already have your own children, you can celebrate this day together with a nice lunch or by going on a trip together.
