HEROINE: Safety bed rails that protect children's sleep

Lucie’s journey to successful business began with attachment parenting, which supports parents and children sleeping together in the same bed instead of in separate cribs. After an unpleasant experience when her son fell out of the marital bed, Lucie wanted to find a solution to prevent such incidents. “Our beds are not adapted for parents and children to sleep together. After several months of searching, I found the right product. Specifically, bed rails. But they were not available on the domestic market, nor on the European one,” explained Lucie, who at that moment discovered what few people manage to find: a major gap in today’s saturated market. Along with that came the idea that this product could appeal to other parents.

The first steps to success

However, shipping costs from abroad were so high that she decided to order in bulk. “I must have had a business instinct. I told myself that I would definitely sell the bed rails in the Czech Republic and that it would be a shame not to buy more,” says the entrepreneur, who ordered sixty of them. “It was a risk, but I was right,” Lucie recalls. The first bed rails for double beds arrived in the Czech Republic in July 2020. The risk paid off, because bed rails sold out immediately. “I sold them through Facebook ads; all the rails were gone within a month,” Lucie recalls, saying that parents’ interest in this aid for co-sleeping excited her and she decided to build her business on it.

This unexpected interest launched the creation of the new company Monkey Mum in January 2021, whose goal is to provide products that are missing for parents who prefer attachment parenting.

From small sales to expansion across Europe

At that time, the company was just at the very beginning. Lucie and her husband prepared orders from home, and they had their warehouse in the garage. Every month, however, revenue grew many times over, Monkey Mum began developing its own products, and already in 2022 the whole company moved to a building with a large warehouse and offices. A year later, it expanded across Europe. Although the main sales happen through its own e-shop, the company also uses marketplaces such as Mall and Allegro.

New showroom in Prague

In September 2023, Monkey Mum’s headquarters moved to Vršovice in Prague. “Here we rented a beautiful two-story house, where we ceremonially opened a showroom on the ground floor, where customers can see bed rails, stair gates, a safety playpen, and other bestsellers in person. Or choose one of the beautiful wooden or fabric toys and try out stylish softshell clothing that fits their children. On the first floor we have offices, a workshop, and a smaller internal warehouse,” Lucie explains.

After four years in business, more than twenty people work at Monkey Mum with Lucie. Lucie herself serves as CEO and handles all important matters. “I work a lot, and with small children it’s sometimes difficult, but I’ve confirmed that no one does my job the way I imagine,” the entrepreneur says with a smile and a shrug.

Last year, Monkey Mum processed more than 12,000 orders and recorded revenue of 33 million Czech korunas. By the end of this year, the company plans to launch sales on Amazon across Europe. In addition, Monkey Mum plans to expand its assortment with its own products and expand into other markets. “For example, the USA is a very interesting market for us, and it’s only a matter of time before we try to sell our first container of goods through American Amazon,” predicts Lucie.
