Even before the baby comes into the world, every mother thinks about whether she will use disposable diapers or cloth ones instead. It’s not just about finances, but also about ecology and gentler materials for little bottoms. So what are the diapering options today, and what advantages and disadvantages do the different types have?
Disposable diapers
Disposable diapers are the most commonly used diapers today. They are also the most readily available, and there is no need for a large initial investment, as they are bought gradually as needed. However, the total cost ends up being higher than with cloth diapers. Using disposable diapers creates a large amount of waste that takes hundreds of years to decompose.
The advantages of disposable diapers are their high absorbency and the fact that after use, you only need to wrap them up and throw them away.
A better option for babies’ bottoms is eco-friendly disposable diapers, which are gentler on children’s skin, break down more easily in nature, and thanks to the materials they are made from, they also contain no chlorine and are not scented. Their price, however, is higher than that of regular disposable diapers.
Cloth diapers
Cloth diapering is no longer as demanding today as it was 30 years ago. There are now several different systems on the market, which can be alternated, or the mother can choose the one that suits her best. These include AIO (All-in-one - put on in the same way as disposable diapers), SIO (Snap-in-one - similar to AIO, only the individual layers snap together with buttons), or outer pants + absorbent layer (classic flats or diaper pants). You can read more about the individual systems in the article A Week of Real Diapers and Cloth Diapering.
Advantages of cloth diapering
- No waste,
- can be used for other children too,
- gentler on the baby’s bottom,
- beautiful patterns
- ideal to combine with elimination communication.
Disadvantages of cloth diapering
- Higher initial investment, as it is necessary to buy enough diapers so they can be washed regularly while also being used.
- They need to be washed, which means higher energy consumption, and in the case of stool, they need to be soaked before washing.
- They need to be changed more often because they are not as absorbent, which can be an advantage when potty training a child.
- Outer pants cannot be dried in a tumble dryer; they need to be left to air dry so their leak-proof ability is not damaged.
- When using flat diapers, you need to learn how to fold them.
Some mothers like to combine disposable and cloth diapers. They use cloth at home, but on trips or at the doctor they prefer disposables for easier handling, and there is also no need to carry a diaper bag with them to bring the diapers home for washing. Disposable diapers are also used more often for newborns so the first urine and stool can be caught and any problems, such as kidney issues, can be detected in time. Alternatively, a very small baby may be born, and even the smallest cloth diapers may be too big for them, so disposables can work better.
Whether you choose disposables or cloth diapers, it is always important to consider the baby, and in the case of severe diaper rash or any diaper-related problem, you can try a different type.
