Someone might say that menstruation is not talked about because it is unclean, it is a hardship for women, and it would be better if menstruation did not exist at all. But nature sees it differently, and there are reasons why it gave women menstruation. Let’s take a look.
A little about menstruation
What menstruation is
Menstruation is regular bleeding that appears approximately every 21-35 days (the range is individual) and lasts about a week. Once a woman starts menstruating, she is ready to conceive a baby. If the egg is not fertilized, the uterus begins to shed it together with the uterine lining, and the woman bleeds. It is therefore a natural and constantly repeating cycle. The first menstruation is called menarche and occurs between the ages of 10 and 15. The last menstruation then comes around the age of 45-55, after which a woman can no longer become pregnant.
Suitable aids
Among the most suitable menstruation aids are certainly the menstrual cup, cloth pads, menstrual underwear, or the menstrual sponge. All these products can be used repeatedly and thus help save our planet. If you prefer classic pads or tampons, always choose bio-quality ones, or you can try free bleeding, where you use nothing at all; you just need to tune in to your body, its signals, and leave for the toilet at the right moment.
Ovulation
Menstruation is preceded by ovulation, thanks to which a woman can conceive a baby, of course on the condition that the egg is fertilized by a sperm, and that is the greatest miracle of all. Every mother who has gone through the thorny path to a baby knows that a child is a gift. When we are trying for a baby and then menstruation comes, we immediately get the answer that it did not work out. Everything unnecessary leaves us, both physically and mentally, and in the next cycle we try again.
Four phases of the cycle
As we have already mentioned, in a healthy cycle there is ovulation (the egg is ready to meet the sperm) and menstruation (the egg was not fertilized and leaves the body). Before menstruation there is then the premenstrual period (fertilization did not occur and the body is preparing for cleansing), meaning a few days when a woman cleans a lot, finishes projects, and at the same time takes everything more personally; PMS (premenstrual syndrome) may also affect her, often accompanied by mood swings, stomach pain, nausea, etc. After menstruation, on the other hand, a woman is full of energy and very dynamic (the uterus is preparing for possible conception). The cycle could be compared to the four seasons, where menstruation represents winter, the period after menstruation spring, the ovulatory phase summer, and the period before menstruation autumn. How perfect.
Why hormonal contraception is not the best solution
Regular cycle, no bleeding or only light bleeding, protection against conception. Let’s be honest, it is very convenient. Every day I pop one pill, then skip a week, and repeat. Or once a week I change a patch on my arm, or I have an intrauterine device inserted in one go. Thanks to that, I am almost 100 percent sure I won’t get pregnant, so I can enjoy myself whenever I feel like it.
Yes, but when we look at it a little more closely, hormonal contraception basically turns women into men. A woman’s cycle is adjusted so that she does not go through all four phases, as is natural for her, but remains only in one. Ovulation does not occur, so it is not possible to get pregnant, and then the subsequent menstruation also does not come. But how is it that women still bleed? Simply because hormones can make the woman’s cycle look “healthy.”
There is also a change in a woman’s scent. When using contraception, a woman smells different than when she is not using it. That can be problematic in a relationship because once she stops taking it, her partner may start to “smell” her, and they usually break up.
Pills or contraceptive patches often have side effects, such as increased appetite and subsequent weight gain, more frequent yeast infections, stomach and headaches, nausea, and so on. The negatives outweigh the positives.
Menstruation is cleansing
During menstruation, a woman is in a phase when she is wise. She turns more inward, rests, and lets go of everything that no longer serves her. It is great when her partner helps with the household, does not force her to work, and pays more attention to the children. When menstruation ends, a woman is suddenly full of energy, gets many things done, does not need as much sleep, and is simply dynamic. You could say that she is suddenly in the opposite mood and energy than she was during menstruation.
A cyclical woman can do much more
It is not always ideal for us to “get it,” because we are going on vacation, have a wedding, want to go swimming in a pool, are going to have a romantic evening with our partner, and so on. Well, what can you do. When we change our view of menstruation and see it as something natural that can stop us and help us sort out our thoughts. Something that shows us we are healthy, because there are many women who have a very irregular menstrual cycle or do not menstruate at all, for example due to stress, too much exercise, or an unhealthy lifestyle. We find out that it is actually genius and beautifully thought out by nature. And when we can tune into our cycle and use each phase to the fullest, we will see a very positive change in our lives.
It is all about the setting of our mind. Menstruation was, is, and will be part of every woman of reproductive age, and so let’s make something out of it that strengthens us and shows a new perspective on life.
